About Meewisse Roses: passion, tradition and innovation
Meewisse Roses is a family business in Bleiswijk (the Netherlands) that has been growing roses since 1981. Founder Aad Meewisse laid the foundations, and together with his son Tom, he has expanded the nursery into a state-of-the-art facility that is entirely dedicated to one variety: the iconic Red Naomi. Every year, more than 13 million of these beautiful roses leave the greenhouse, thanks to the work of around 25 dedicated employees.
Sustainability at Meewisse Roses – not just green, but smart growing
Organic crop protection
Meewisse Roses uses organic crop protection. Instead of heavy chemical pesticides, they rely on natural methods to control pests, which ensures healthier cultivation and less environmental impact.

Innovative irrigation with oxygen-rich nanobubbles
One of Meewisse Roses' most groundbreaking sustainable measures is the installation of a nanobubble generator. This technology enriches the drainage water with very fine oxygen bubbles, which drastically increases the dissolved oxygen (DO) — to around 35–40 mg/l.
- This extra oxygen allows the roots of the rose plants to absorb nutrients more effectively.
- In addition, measurements have shown that pathogens such as Fusarium and Pythium in the water are significantly reduced when the nanobubbles are activated.
- This technology therefore contributes to a healthier root environment, which benefits the robustness and lifespan of the plants.
Precision fertilisation with real-time data control
Meewisse Roses uses the Priva Precision Irrigation Management (PIM) system, which displays real-time measurements of water content, pH, EC and drain volume in the substrate plates.
- This allows irrigation to be precisely tailored to the actual needs of the plant.
- This leads to better water use, less waste and a better balanced root environment.
- This optimisation reduces the need for “post-watering” or over-fertilisation, which lowers resource use.

Circulation and reuse of nutrients
As part of its greenhouse water management, Meewisse Roses is working on recirculating drainage water. A study conducted as part of greenhouse horticulture research showed that 100% recirculation was possible, enabling them to save around 10% on artificial fertiliser.
- Reduced fertiliser consumption means less impact on the environment.
- At the same time, osmosis water is used more sparingly, which further reduces water demand.
Efficient sorting & less waste
Meewisse Roses uses advanced sorting technology from 4More Technology (IRISS system), including AI-supported defect detection.
- This technology ensures that defective flowers or stems are identified early on, reducing waste.
- Automation and accurate quality control make sorting faster, more efficient and less prone to errors, ensuring that only the best roses enter the chain.
