Want to bring the autumn atmosphere into your home with a fresh bouquet of roses? Then we have a really nice DIY project for you, which will bring that cosy autumn atmosphere straight into your home. So if you like to be creative and love beautiful roses, then read on! We are going to explain step by step how to make an autumn vase. You can transform your own glass vase into a real autumn vase. This will make your home even more festive for the cosy season!
What do you need for your autumn vase?
- A glass vase
- A bouquet of roses
- A pumpkin
- Acorns, dried leaves and/or chestnuts
- A glue gun
- Optional: Paint in autumn colours
- Optional: Mod Podge
- Optional: Something to hollow out the pumpkin with
- Optional: Old newspapers to put under your craft project

A pumpkin vase for your roses
For the first autumn vase, you will need a glass vase that fits inside your pumpkin. Your glass vase will be placed inside the pumpkin, so you will hardly be able to see it. It is important to use a glass vase, because it is the easiest to clean, which will greatly benefit your bouquet of roses. And you too, of course, because you will be able to enjoy your roses for much longer! You can make this vase as follows:
- Cut off the top of the pumpkin, slightly larger than the vase.
- Empty the inside of the pumpkin completely so that the vase can fit inside.
- Slide the clean glass vase into the pumpkin until it fits.
- If you want more stability, or if the pumpkin is just a little too small, cut the bottom of the pumpkin to the size of the vase, so that the vase stands on its own bottom and not in your vase. This way, nothing wobbles and your vase stays in place better!
- Fill the vase with water and the first sachet of rose food.
- Arrange your bouquet however you like.
Your vase is now ready. Place your bouquet and vase in a nice spot and enjoy your roses!
From glass to autumn vase
The second autumn vase you can make yourself at home (also a nice idea for a fun afternoon of crafting with the kids) is this one. It may be useful to sand the glass vase lightly so that the glue has something to adhere to. Only do this on the outside of the vase, not the inside.
If you want, you can first give the vase an autumn colour by painting it. Then your base will already be much more autumnal! Of course, you don't have to do this. What else you can do to decorate your vase:
- Use mod podge to stick the leaves to the vase. Apply a layer under the leaf and a layer over the leaf. This will ensure that it stays in place. This is a fun activity to do with the kids!
- Use your glue gun to stick chestnuts, acorns and other fun autumn items you've found outside onto the vase. Tip: the glue gun gets very hot, so make sure your vase is made of thick glass so that it doesn't crack. Also, use small amounts of glue and let the glue dry thoroughly.
