An atmospheric table makes any dinner or party extra special. Fortunately, you do not need to be a professional stylist to put up something beautiful. With a few small vases, some fresh flowers and a little creativity, you can make beautiful table decorations yourself. In this blog we will show you how to create a simple, elegant and affordable table arrangement using roses, eucalyptus and gypsophila.
What do you need for a beautifully decorated table?
- A table runner
- Small vases in different shapes and heights (think recycled jam or juice bottles, or mini vases from the thrift store)
- Fresh roses (colour depending on your theme/atmosphere)
- Eucalyptus (for texture and scent)
- Gypsophila (for an airy, romantic effect)
- Rose shears
Colours and themes
For a fresh spring look, choose pastel shades, such as soft pink roses and salmon-coloured roses. For a more autumnal look, use darker roses (such as deep red roses or orange roses) and combine with gypsophila. The bright colours of summer are best reflected in a mix of bright pink, orange roses and yellow roses. Does your theme suit winter better? Then go for example for white roses combined with some blue roses.

Flowers for the table
You can pick the flowers separately, by colour and choose the number. What you can also do is choose a rose bouquet that you like and suits your style. You can then use everything in that bouquet and divide it among the vases. It just depends on what suits your style and what you like. Look through the mixed bouquets to see if there is something you can use. Keep in mind that it is not just one bouquet, but that you will divide it over several smaller vases. Step 1: The table runner
Choose a table runner long enough to cover the entire length of the table. This is the base of your table decoration. So choose a colour that matches your theme. Do you want a colourful and summery look? Then go for a cheerful light, or brighter colours. Similarly, you can choose a softer pastel colour or a white or beige table runner. Because it is the basis for your table decoration, it is best to go for a solid colour. A table runner with a busy pattern can look very busy when all the decoration is on the table. For a playful effect, drape the table runner loosely over the table. If you are going for a tighter look, you can lay the table runner straight on the table.
Step 2: Gather your vases
Small vases create a playful and airy effect on the table. You don't have to use all the same vases-yet variation in size and shape adds charm. Put them together in groups of three or four, spaced a few centimetres apart. Mix the higher and lower vases to create a playful whole! Preferably use glass vases, as this is better for the roses.
Step 3: Fill the vases with water
Fill each clean vase about three-quarters full with clean, cold water. In each vase, add some flower food, which you got with your order of roses. This will keep the roses fresh for longer.
Step 4: Cut the flowers to size
Cut the stems of your roses, eucalyptus and gypsophila at an angle so they can absorb water well. Make sure the roses stick out above the rim of the vase-you want them to be visible, but not too high, so they don't block the view at the table. Also consider the slightly taller vases, those stems should last longer than the roses you put in the smaller vases.
Step 5: Arrange the flowers
Put 1 rose in each vase as an eye-catcher, a few sprigs of eucalyptus for greenery and texture, and a tuft of gypsophila for a soft, romantic look. It doesn't have to be symmetrical-play with height and direction for a natural look. Want a more playful effect? Fill each vase with up to 2 stems. Vases with just some gypsophila, without roses, can actually give a very playful effect. Try it out and choose what suits your style best!

Step 6: Distribute the vases over the table
Playfully place the filled vases along the length of the table. For an oblong table you can create a kind of flower ribbon, for a round table you can place a playful group in the middle.
For extra atmosphere on the table
You can also add some extra decorative items on the table, bringing the atmosphere and the whole thing together even more. Consider, for example:
- Dinner candles
- Rose petals
- Small disco balls
- Christmas baubles
- Confetti
- Easter bunnies
- Chocolates
