Peonies are known for their lush flowers, soft colours and elegant appearance. In the past, they were a true seasonal flower – available for only a few weeks a year, usually in May and June. (This is still the case at most florists, by the way.) But nowadays, you can enjoy fresh peonies from us almost all year round, with the exception of September and October. How is this possible? Thanks to cultivation in different parts of the world, smart logistics and a focus on quality and sustainability.
Where do peonies come from all year round?
To ensure year-round availability, peonies are grown at different times of the year in countries with a suitable climate.
The Netherlands – the heart of the peony season (May to June)
In the Netherlands, peonies bloom profusely in late spring and early summer. This is when local peonies are at their best: large flowers, intense colours and a fresh fragrance. The cooler nights and longer days ensure strong, healthy stems and perfect flower structure.
Chile & Ecuador – peonies in winter (November to January)
When winter arrives in the United Kingdom, spring begins in the southern hemisphere. In countries such as Chile and Ecuador, peonies grow under ideal conditions.
- Ecuador is located at high altitude, which means the climate is cool and stable — perfect for strong, long-lasting peonies.
- Chile benefits from fresh sea air and fertile soil, which ensures flowers of exceptional quality.
Israel & Turkey – peonies in early spring (February to April)
While Europe is still waking up from winter, beautiful peonies are already blooming in Israel and Turkey.
- Israel has mild winters and plenty of sunshine, which ensures early flowering.
- Turkey, with its mountainous areas, has similar climatic advantages, meaning that peonies are available here slightly earlier than in Northern Europe.
This creates a smooth chain of availability, ensuring that top-quality peonies are available almost all year round.

Quality: not all peonies are the same
Year-round peonies are not just about availability, but above all about quality. Professional growers select varieties that are suitable for their specific climate and pay extra attention to:
- Flower size and shape
- Stem strength
- Colour intensity
- Shelf life in the vase
Thanks to modern cooling techniques and fast transport lines, the flowers often arrive in Europe within a few days of being cut — still fresh, strong and fragrant as they were in the field. One of the strongest peonies, which is often the first to become available again and does well in the vase, is the Sarah Bernhardt. It is the most famous, beloved and strongest peony there is. The Gardenia peony is also very strong and is often available for a long time, even out of season.

Sustainability: enjoying exotic peonies responsibly
International cultivation naturally raises questions about sustainability. Fortunately, more and more peonies are being produced sustainably.
- Many growers in Ecuador and Israel work with water-saving irrigation systems.
- In Chile, organic crop protection and natural compost are increasingly being used.
- Transport takes place in refrigerated, energy-efficient cargo flights, and where possible with CO₂ compensation programmes.
In addition, modern cooling techniques extend shelf life, which prevents waste. We consciously choose suppliers with sustainability certificates (such as MPS).
World-class peonies, all year round
Thanks to global cultivation, advanced techniques and sustainable choices, you can now enjoy fresh, high-quality peonies almost all year round. Whether they come from the Netherlands, Ecuador, Chile, Turkey or Israel, each flower tells its own story of craftsmanship, climate and care for nature.
So even if it's grey or cold outside, with a fresh bunch of peonies you can always bring a touch of spring into your home.
