The sun is shining, the temperature is rising and your flowers are wilting quickly? Just as we burn when we sit in the sun for too long, your bouquet also suffers when it is exposed to the sun. You want to enjoy your bouquet for as long as possible, even in summer. But how? We explain how you can protect your bouquet of roses from the summer heat and enjoy it for as long as possible!
Why roses need extra attention in summer
Roses are beautiful but delicate flowers. In warm temperatures (25°C and above), they evaporate moisture more quickly and lose their firmness. Without the right care, they can droop or even wilt within a few days. Fortunately, you can get the most out of your bouquet with a few simple steps.
What to look out for:
- The location
- Water
- The care

Where to place the roses: Choose the location of the bouquet carefully
Something we see a lot is placing a bouquet of roses in direct sunlight. Roses do not like direct sunlight. In fact, it causes them to wilt more quickly, which is obviously not the intention. Do not place your bouquet in direct sunlight, so avoid window sills or large windows where the sun shines in. The other extreme is air conditioning, but this can also have a negative impact on the vase life of your roses. Draughts and the breeze from an air conditioner are also not good for the longevity of your roses. It is better to place your bouquet in a shady spot where it is nice and cool.
We understand that it can be aesthetically pleasing to place a bouquet next to the fruit bowl on the table, but roses prefer not to be there. Fruit emits ethylene gas, which causes the fruit to ripen and become ready to eat. This gas has the same effect on your bouquet of flowers. The flowers will quickly become “ripe” and their buds will start to droop. It is better to move the fruit bowl to the kitchen temporarily.
Change the water for your roses
When it is very warm outside, you need to drink plenty of fluids, and the same applies to roses. Your bouquet will also drink more when it is warm. Top up the vase more often and change the water every other day. Fresh water in a clean glass vase is extremely good for your roses. Warmer weather also allows bacteria to grow more quickly. When you change the water, give the vase a quick wash with soapy water. This will prevent bacteria from affecting the life of your roses and allow you to enjoy them for longer. (And don't forget the flower food.)
Give your roses a little extra care in summer
Caring for your bouquet of roses is always important, but in summer it's just that little bit more important. In addition to changing the water and cleaning the vase, there are other things you can do to ensure that your roses last longer.
- Cut the stems at an angle every now and then. Make sure the capillaries in the stem are always open. By cutting 1-2 cm off the stem every now and then, you allow the rose to drink properly again. Use a sharp knife or a good pair of rose shears so that you don't crush the capillaries.
- Place your bouquet in a cool, dry place overnight. This will give your bouquet a chance to recover from the warm weather.
- When changing the water, use cold water, especially on extremely warm days.
