Are your peonies not opening? Here’s what you can do!
You’ve bought (or been given – lucky you) a beautiful bunch of peonies, proudly put them in a vase… and then absolutely nothing happens. The buds stay closed as if they’re keeping a secret. Frustrating? A bit. Solvable? Definitely. With these tips, you can help your peonies bloom as if they’re auditioning for a flower advert.
Which peonies bloom most beautifully?
Not every peony is equally cooperative. These are popular varieties that (with a little care) bloom beautifully:
- Sarah Bernhardt – classic pink and super-full
- Duchesse de Nemours – elegant white, smells lovely
- Gardenia – soft cream tones
- Coral Charm – changes colour, extra fun
Tip: some varieties just need a bit more patience. Yes, even flowers have their own character.

1. Rinse off the “sugary coating”
Peonies often have a sticky coating on their buds. Sounds cute, doesn’t it? This coating can cause the flower to literally stick fast.
What to do:
- Gently hold the bud under lukewarm water (make sure no water gets inside the bud; hold it upside down and pat it dry)
- Gently massage the coating off
Think of it as a mini spa for your flowers.
2. Remove excess foliage
Leaves in the water = a breeding ground for bacteria = wilted flowers.
So:
- Remove any leaves that are hanging in the water
- Leave only the attractive greenery above the waterline
Your flowers will stay fresh for longer and the arrangement will look neater.

3. Give them space in the vase
Peonies don’t like being cramped. They’re a bit like divas.
Important:
- Use a spacious vase
- Make sure the buds aren’t squashed together
Air and space = better blooms.
4. Use cut-flower food
A little food goes a long way. Think of it as coffee for flowers.
Why it’s important:
- Inhibits bacteria
- Stimulates flowering
- Extends the lifespan
So just use that sachet – don’t save it ‘for later’. You’ll receive two with every bouquet from us: the first to use straight away and the second to use after a few days.

5. Place them in the right spot
Not in direct sunlight, not next to the radiator, and not in a draughty spot.
Ideal spot:
- A cool, well-lit room
- Away from fruit (yes, really – it speeds up ageing)
6. Change the water regularly
After a few days, the water becomes cloudy and… not exactly appealing.
Here’s what to do:
- Change the water every 2–3 days
- Trim the stems again with a sharp rose shears
After about a week, you can do this again to give them a second boost.

Finally: patience (unfortunately)
Sometimes it’s not down to you. Peonies are seasonal flowers and are highly sensitive to temperature. But by following the tips above, you can ensure they still burst into bloom.
