Why peonies normally only bloom for a short period

In Europe – and therefore also in the Netherlands – peonies are true seasonal flowers. Their normal blooming season runs roughly from May to July. After that, they say, ‘Bye, I'm going to sleep.’ That's because peonies need rest. And not just a little chill time, but real hibernation mode. They need at least two months of cold weather to allow the soil to recover and the plant to recharge for a new season. Without that winter break, they simply don't feel like blooming. (And believe us: a peony that doesn't feel like blooming is just a plant, nothing more.)

But how are peonies available almost all year round?

The secret: we don't just source these flowers from Europe, we follow the seasons worldwide. When it's winter (or autumn) here, it's peony season somewhere else in the world. Thanks to smart partnerships with sustainable and specialised growers, we can import peonies from countries where the season is slightly different. Think of:
